New multimillion facilities to improve access to healthcare

Five new health facilities in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district are to be officially opened by North West MEC for Health and Social Development Rebecca Kasienyane, as part of ensuring access to basic primary healthcare services by having permanent structures. The Protective unit, Psychiatric unit, Radiation Oncology unit and three other clinics were constructed to the tune of R157 million.

Built within the Klerksdorp hospital, Radiation Oncology unit is expected to improve provision of health service to cancer patients who used to receive treatment in Gauteng. The province was without radiation facility; hence patients were travelling to Gauteng hospitals for treatment at the cost of the department. This resulted in some patients failing to finish their treatment as they had to travel long distances.

Protective and Psychiatric units are housed within Witrand hospital while clinics are built in Kanana Township, Orkney and Maquassi Hill. These clinics will render reproductive services, nutrition, pre and post natal care, minor ailments, chronic conditions, TB and other communicable diseases. Orkney clinic is accredited to offer antiretroviral treatment.
