Nelson Mandela Day: Correctional Services

The Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Ms Hlengiwe Mkhize, will lead a group of prisoners who are currently under the department's community corrections and rehabilitation programme, at the Multi-Purpose Community Centre Hall, Extension 7, in Diepsloot, near Johannesburg, on Saturday, 18 July 2009 at 09h00 in a campaign is aimed at reintegrating the prisoners back to their communities.

The prisoners will be involved in community projects such as:

1. Housing – Building of houses for the elderly.
2.. Children's Activities – Distribution of material from the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation.
3. Painting – Painting of the roof at the clinic.
4. Cleaning Campaign – Cleaning of illegal dumping areas in Extension 7 and 6.

The local business people, churches and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Department of Housing officials and volunteers will be role players as partners during the event.

Cabinet has at its meeting of 1 July 2009, endorsed the call for the celebration of Mandela Day, as global Mandela Day. This campaign calls upon South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes of their time improving the living conditions of others, something that would make a difference in their communities. This is in recognition of the 67 years that Madiba spent fighting against the evils of apartheid.
