At least over 60 needy Nkangala learners are set to benefit school uniform from Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe’s Overall Friday programme this week.
The programme encourages departmental officials to leave their air conditioned offices to go to the communities and do practical work while wearing overalls on Fridays. It differs from handing over donations to painting victim friendly facilities at the police stations.
MEC Shongwe will on Friday, 6 May 2011, donate worth over R21 000 school uniform to schools identified by his department in partnership with the school governing bodies and community police forums.
The donations from private sponsors are MEC Shongwe’s means of promoting the good relationship between the police and the communities.
Earlier this year, one of the big clothing outlet PEP Stores assisted the MEC when he donated school uniform to Piet Retief rural schools worth R15 000.
The department’s Nkangala Regional Director Samuel Lefifi said the donation is government’s initiative of promoting learning while at the same time it alleviates the plight of the disadvantaged learners.
“With this gesture, learners would take pride in their studies as this would enhance their confidence at schools.
“They will not necessarily feel left out of the schooling system,” said Lefifi.
The donations will take place around KwaMhlanga schools as follows:
