NCOP takes Parliament to Qwaqwa

The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) will on Saturday, 2 October 2010 hold a public meeting in Qwaqwa, Free State, in preparation for the Taking Parliament to the People programme. The programme will take place at Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality in November. 

Taking Parliament to the People programme is a key aspect of implementing Parliament’s role of exercising oversight over government programmes and policies. It is in line with Parliament’s vision of ensuring a Parliament accessible to all people and that plays a vital role in providing a public platform for the airing of the electorate’s views with the objective of improving the quality of the lives of the people of South Africa. 

The purpose of the public meeting is to give the community of Thabo Mofutsanyane District Municipality an opportunity to make their voices heard while helping members of the NCOP to identify issues that will be dealt with during the Taking Parliament to the People programme in November. 

Before Saturday’s public meeting, the NCOP delegation will be divided into two groups that will visit various projects including schools and hospitals around Dihlabeng and Maluti-a-Phofung Municipalities. One group will be led by the NCOP Chairperson, Mr Mninwa Mahlangu, and the other by the Deputy Chairperson Ms Thandi Memela. 

NCOP is a House of Parliament that represents the interests of provinces in the national sphere of government.
