National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Unemployed Graduates Roadshow yields to placement of 5 000 graduates

Following the successful implementation of the first phase of the National Youth Development Agency’s Unemployed Graduates Roadshow earlier last month, plans are well underway to roll out the second phase of the campaign.

In September the NYDA led by its Executive Chairperson Andile Lungisa launched countrywide unemployed graduates roadshow aimed at collecting CV’s of unemployed graduates with the aim of linking them with existing job and training opportunities within government and the private sector.

“We are pleased to report that since we ran phase one across five provinces, in a space of one week we’ve been approached by  five private companies  with the intention to place a total of 5 000 unemployed graduates in available job opportunities at their respective companies.  If we can achieve these partnerships in a space of one week, imagine the results we can yield in impacting further lives if more partners came on board”, says Lungisa.

“Thousands of young people who graduate from higher learning institutions still face a burden of being unable to find work when they leave university. A number of reasons are given for this growing trend, including education and training as well as lack of experience”, says Lungisa. He says the NYDA undertook this campaign to mitigate this growing challenge. “The only way for young people to gain experience is through being given opportunities and on the job training”, he says.

As part of the first phase of the campaign the NYDA visited Free State, Northern Cape, North West, and Eastern Cape collecting a total of 612 CV’s. The campaign is part of the NYDA’s intervention to reduce youth unemployment and contribute to the socio-economic development of young people in the country and focuses on mobilising unemployed graduates with tertiary qualifications from NQF level five and upwards.

As part of the drive to collect the CVs, the NYDA uses its existing system of Jobs and Opportunities Seekers’ Database (JOBS) to upload the CVs received from young people. JOBS is an online database for young people looking for job and training opportunities and currently has 13 945 registered unemployed graduates. While welcoming the job opportunities presented by the 5 companies, the NYDA further calls on more companies to come on board and change the lives of many other unemployed graduates.

Meanwhile the second phase of the campaign kicks off in the Western Cape next week, followed by KwaZulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Gauteng.
