National Science Week ends on a high note

The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom will on Friday, 6 August 2010 deliver the closing address of the National Science Week at the Fort Hare University, Alice campus.

The highlight of the event will be the handing over by of the mobile laboratory to the Forte School of Science and Technology (FOSST) Discovery Centre by the Deputy Minister. FOSST is a science

centre hosted by the University. It is one on the 23 Science Centres that the Department of Science and Technology (DST) supports in its promotion of science awareness. The centres receive  annual development grant support from the DST.

A grant of over R300 000 has been awarded to the Centre towards the purchase and equipping of a Toyota Quantum panel van that will now be used as a mobile laboratory, serving specifically schools around the Alice, Fort Beaufort, Bisho and King Williamstown.

In the past five years, the DST has invested just over R1million to the Centre, which has been used to enhance youth's access to science, engineering and technology. The centre will also award prizes to learners and educators who took part in the weekly competitions in celebration of the National Science Week. More than 30 schools participated in the competitions.
