On 26 January 2010, Minister Ndebele announced that during February the Department of Transport will host a Road Safety Summit, in order to deliberate on the unacceptable number of road deaths in our country.
"Together, we must all do much more to reduce the economic and emotional devastation caused by road crashes and road deaths. We, therefore, call on vehicle manufacturers, public and private donors, non-governmental organisations, the religious sector, victims of road crashes, families of those killed and injured in road crashes, experts and in fact every South African to partner with government in working towards safer roads and vehicles and greater investment in preventing road traffic injuries. The millions of people who use our roads everyday deserve safer roads," said the Minister.
The Road Safety Summit will focus on forming partnerships to create ownership of the road safety programme, as well as ensuring a consistent approach to dealing with road safety throughout the country. With support from stakeholders, each province will be able to do much more to reduce deaths on the roads, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Hundreds of stakeholders from all over the country are expected to attend.
All media are also invited to attend. Journalists attending must confirm their attendance by no later than 14h00 tomorrow, Thursday 25 February 2010 with Sello Tshipi on 012 309 3846 or Tshipia@dot.gov.za.
Road safety is everybody's responsibility.
