Following preparation processes and provincial inspection, the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Molefi Sefularo will convene a national health workshop on readiness for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Pretoria on Monday, 8 February 2010.
The objectives of the workshop, to be held at the Southern Sun conference centre, Beatrix Street in Pretoria, is to assess our readiness as health to ensure that we deliver on our commitments as outlined in the bid documents.
Our commitments include ensuring the availability of a comprehensive health and medical response on a 24 hour basis for the duration of the tournament, in the following areas:
* Emergency medical services
* Hospital services
* Port health
* Environmental health
* Communicable diseases control
* Health promotion
* Forensic medical services
* Clinical medico-legal
* Pathology services
The workshop follows a series of inspection visits by Dr Sefularo accompanied by the surgeon general of the South African Military Health Service (SAMHS) to stadiums and host cities to establish and test the level of readiness of our services. This, include an inspection of clinical and emergency medical services.
The Deputy Minister has visited Limpopo, North West. The surgeon general accompanied by the Local Organising Committee’s Head of Medical Services, Dr Victor Ramatheselle, also inspected Moses Mabhida during the match against Zimbabwe.
“It is our responsibility as Department of Health to ensure that our visitors during the world cup find our health services adequate and responsive to their needs. We have put systems in place to mitigate the risks of injuries, including those that might arise during mass gatherings, as well as prevent and treat communicable diseases, working together with private hospitals and healthcare providers,” said Dr Sefularo.
Members of the media are invited for the opening and presentation of reports on readiness by all provinces.
