National Council of Provinces hosts children’s seminar

As part of its 15th year anniversary celebrations, the National Council of Provinces in partnership with United Nations Children’s Funds (UNICEF), will on Thursday 31 May to 1 June 2012, host a children’s seminar, themed ‘investing in children’ at the Good Hope Chambers at Parliament.

The seminar, which coincides with Child Protection Week, has been preceded by a series of workshops around the country where children from all walks of life had an opportunity of voicing issues affecting them. A report back on these workshops will be given during the seminar and representatives of the children will have an opportunity to address Members of Parliament (MPs).

Topics such as, South Africa and the rights of children, maternal health, children living and working on the streets, corporal punishment, child justice system and the role of the Non-Governmental Organisations will be covered during the seminar. Speakers will come from academia, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Executive. MPs, Members of Provincial Legislatures, Cabinet Ministers and NGO representatives will attend the event.

The seminar is aimed at protecting and promoting the rights of children, initiating public dialogue and action on behalf of children and contributing towards the creation of a legacy for the 4th Parliament.
