The National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane will on 10 December 2010, officiate certificate handover ceremony for young person’s that completed a one year apprenticeship project known as pupil artisans.
The first beneficiaries of this ground breaking community outreach project are 22 young persons from Cullinan (Refilwe) in Pretoria and 12 juvenile offenders whom some of them have now obtained employment.
This is a strategic partnership between the Department of Correctional and Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA) which sponsored the six months intensive training programme to the value of R500,000. The initiative seeks to promote youth development within and beyond the boundaries of Correctional Services and to foster a sense of responsibility among the inmates to become law-abiding citizens when they are released from custody. In addition, it is also aimed at skilling the youth of our country and creates sustainable employment opportunities for this vulnerable sector of our society.
The ceremony will be attended by the Department of Labour, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), SASSETA and the Nokeng Tsa Taemane Local Municipality representatives whom will tour the Zonderwater Correctional Centre workshop and witness how the beneficiaries (offenders) put their expertise into practice.
Media will be allowed to tour the prison workshop in company of key stakeholders, interview and take photos of the offenders who are the beneficiaries of this laudable initiative.
