National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane to handover a variety of musical instruments to juvenile offenders at Emthonjeni Youth Centre

To unlock creative talents and maximum potential of inmates who are still behind bars the National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Mr Tom Moyane will handover a variety of musical instruments to twenty four (24) juvenile offenders at Emthonjeni Youth Centre in Baviaanspoort Management Area, East of Pretoria on 25 October 2011.

He will be joined on stage by the Director General of the Department of Arts & Culture MrSibusiso Xabaand the delegation from the University of Pretoria music education department who teach, coach and mentor the inmates on how to use the musical instruments. Mr Xaba will officially handover the musical equipments to Mr Moyane.

The delegation from the University of Pretoria consists of music lecturers and students who study Arts and Culture BMus Honours. Juvenile offenders are being trained in music skills development and the University of Pretoria will issue the inmates with certificates of completion the Music Unlocked Project.

The musical equipments are donated by the Department of Arts & Culture and are valued at R49 000 rands. The items are:

  • 17 Yamaha guitars
  • 17 Mbiras
  • 1 Yamaha keyboard
  • 35 Yamaha recorders
  • 35 recorder book1 & CD
  • 35 recorder book 2; and
  • 8 sets of guitar strings
