National Civic Remembrance Day Service and Parade, Johannesburg

The annual National Civic Remembrance Day Service and Parade will take place on Sunday, 8 November 2009 at 14h00, at the Cenotaph, Harrison Street, Johannesburg. With this event the city of Johannesburg will pay tribute to the South Africans who lost their lives in service of South Africa.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) plays a prominent role in organising the event by providing participating members of both the regular and the reserves forces for the march past. Several military veteran organisations as well as youth and volunteer organisations will take part in this historic event.

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Amos Masondo, will be the main functionary and Lieutenant General Solly Shoke, the Chief of the South African Army, will represent SANDF.

This year marks the 89th anniversary of the Armistice Day when peace was declared at end World War I. The theme of this year’s event is “unification of military veterans.”

The parade will start with the trooping of various bands followed by marching columns, which will march past the cenotaph. Thereafter the Remembrance Day Service and wreath laying ceremony will take place.

Journalists, photographers and cameramen are invited to cover the event.
