The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in partnership with Sedibeng District Municipality will unveil plans to mark the 2010 National Archives Week at Shalimar Ridge Hall, Ratanda on 17 May 2010. The week long events will be celebrated under the theme: “Archives for all: let us share our stories”.
This will be the first time the Gauteng Provincial archives celebrates the National Archives Week which from now marks the beginning of an annual celebration in the province.
The move is aimed at making information users, including school going children aware of the National Archives and the importance of proper management of records for the preservation of the country’s heritage.
“National Archives constitute a vital role of the nation’s heritage and are a means of enhancing national identity, nation building and empowerment,” said MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Nelisiwe Moerane.
During the National Archives Week, the Gauteng provincial archives will drive the awareness campaign to two schools in Ratanda, namely Ratanda Secondary and Ratanda New School with the target being the grades 11 and 12 pupils.
The awareness campaign will also introduce learners to archives and records management methods of preserving documented history and its impact on their daily lives.
“It is imperative that the school going children are taught the functions and role of the National Archives so that they learn the importance of preserving and conserving South Africa’s Heritage,” said the MEC.
