Municipal by-elections scheduled for 27 January 2010

Municipal ward by-elections will take place on Wednesday, 27 January 2010 in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga and North West.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed that 12 vacant wards will be contested by 29 candidates of whom one is an independent candidate and the rest represents seven political parties. One ward is uncontested.

One by-election will take place in the Eastern Cape:

* Ward three in Ndlambe (Port Alfred), EC105 will be contested by Siphiwo Benz Funde of the African National Congress and Sandor Sebastian Isaacs of the Democratic Alliance.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

Two by-elections will take place in the Free State, both in Letsemeng (Koffiefontein), FS161:

* Ward one in will be contested by Mosebi Michael Tsiloana of the African National Congress and Gemi Simon Madiba of the Congress of the People.
* Ward two will be contested by Jerry Rittles, an independent candidate, Siena Cloete of the African National Congress and Vanita Amanda Coetzee of the Congress of the People.

Both wards were previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the expulsion of the councillor by the MEC.

Eight by-elections will take place in Mpumalanga:

** Ward 12 in Mkhondo (Piet Retief), MP303 will be contested by Vukani Robert Vundla of the African National Congress and Thulani Bongani Dlamini of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward two in Lekwa (Standerton), MP305 will be contested by Lindokuhle Blessing Robert Dhlamini of the African National Congress, Muzi Sydwell Mashinini of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Selby Sibusiso Dhlamini of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward four in Lekwa (Standerton), MP305 will be contested by Maria Mankomo Mnisi of the African National Congress and Tebogo Archibald Gumbi of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 12 in Lekwa (Standerton), MP305 will be contested by Sechaba Stephen Mosia of the African National Congress and Joel Tokozani Hlatshwayo of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 14 in Lekwa (Standerton), MP305 is uncontested. Mphikeleli George Makhanye of the African National Congress is the only candidate.

The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 24 in Steve Tshwete (Middelburg), MP313 will be contested by Ponono Jessie Mahlangu of the African National Congress; and Aviwe Ntamo of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward two in Thaba Chweu (Sabie), MP321 will be contested by Chukela Elias Mokoena of the African National Congress, Magobe Marry Modisha of the Congress of the People, Abraham Benjamin Rabie of the Democratic Alliance, Boetman Makhehlana Mabuza of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania and Hendrik Ockert Faul of the Vryheidsfront Plus.

The ward was previously represented by African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward five in Umjindi (Barberton), MP323 will be contested by Prince Vusumuzi Mkhatshwa of the African National Congress and Simangele Maria Mathebula of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

One by-election will take place in North West:

* Ward nine in Ramotshere Moiloa (Zeerust), NW385 will be contested by Michael Gaorekoe Megalane of the African National Congress, Kelebogile Donation Makoko of the Congress of the People and Josiah Olefile Motsamai of the United Christian Democratic Party.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 41 030 voters are registered in the 12 wards and 43 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
