Municipal by-elections scheduled for 26 May 2010

Municipal ward by-elections will take place on Wednesday, 26 May 2010 in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West and the Western Cape.

The Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed that 15 vacant wards will be contested by 43 candidates of whom five are independent candidates and the rest represents nine political parties.

Two by-elections will take place in the Eastern Cape:

* Ward three in Amahlathi (Stutterheim), EC124 will be contested by Zolile Butrosbutros Mboso of the African National Congress and Asanda Jama of the United Democratic Movement.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward 17 in Lukhanji (Queenstown), IEC134 will be contested by Olivier Ketelo, an independent candidate; Mxolisi Victor Blekiwe of the African National Congress and Phelibongo Diamond Cingci of the United Democratic Movement.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant to the expulsion of the councillor by the MEC.

Only one by-election will take place in Gauteng:

* Ward 31 in Mogale City (Krugersdorp), GT481 will be contested by Dipuo Lillian Mosese of the African National Congress and Hendrik van Putten of the Democratic Alliance.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

Six by-elections will take place in the KwaZulu-Natal:

* Ward one in Umzumbe (Umzumbe), KZN213 will be contested by Dunford Khulekani Msomi of the African National Congress and Bonginkosi Goodman Cele of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 16 in Hibiscus Coast (Port Shepstone), KZN216 will be contested by Edward Thomas McGee, an independent candidate; Meryl van Wyk of the African National Congress; Tjaart Andries Petrus Kruger of the Democratic Alliance and Christopher Mlungisi Dlamini of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the termination of the councillor’s membership by the party.

* Ward four in Msunduzi (Pietermaritzburg), KZN225 will be contested by Zwelithini Jeffrey Ndlovu of the African Christian Democratic Party, Michael Mani Mlaba of the African National Congress and Thulani Solomon Khumalo of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 15 in Nqutu (Nqutu), KZN242 will be contested by Lucas Bongani Lindumbuso Zulu of the African National Congress and Mbongeni Ephraim Mnguni of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 11 in Msinga (Pomeroy), KZN244 will be contested by Mhlushwa Amord Mntungwa of the African National Congress and Mhawukeleni Wellington Sokhela of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward seven in Ndwedwe (Ndwedwe), KZN293 will be contested by Bhekani Joseph Blose of the African National Congress and Bongeleni Isaac Dube of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

Two by-elections will take place in Limpopo:

* Ward seven in Greater Groblersdal (Groblersdal), LIM472 will be contested by Motiba William Ramphisa, an independent candidate; Thembi Cynthia Sithole of the African National Congress; and Mpho Masoga of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 18 in Greater Tubatse (Burgersfort, Ohrigstad, Eastern Tubatse), LIM475 will be contested by Kwenyeni Forche Mkhabela of the African National Congress, Jimmy Augustina Mahole of the Congress of the People and Piet Thembisile Mashele of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

Two by-elections will take place in North West:

* Ward 13 in Moretele (Temba), NW371 will be contested by Patrick Rampekile Lepule of the African National Congress, Ramorwadi Jeffrey Chauke of the African People's Convention and Roseline Ntombifuthi Radebe of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

* Ward six in Mafikeng (Mafikeng), NW383 will be contested by Keneilwe Kgole of the African Christian Democratic Party, Peter Ohagiseng Babedi of the African National Congress, Thapelo Theophelus Seleke of the Congress of the People, Ramulotsi Norman Chaena of the South African Political Party and Carol Boitumelo Motshegare of the United Christian Democratic Party.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.

Two by-elections will take place in Western Cape:

* Ward 44 in City of Cape Town (Cape Town), CPT will be contested by Anthony Charles Moses, an independent candidate; Ethel Zuzeka Mnotoza of the African National Congress and Shehaam Sims of the Democratic Alliance.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.

* Ward 12 in Theewaterskloof (Caledon) will be contested by Henry Syster, an independent candidate; Nokwanda Elizabeth Roro of the African National Congress; Catharine Nondumiso Booysen of the Democratic Alliance and Tembile Nomshuve of the United Democratic Movement.

The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the expulsion of the councillor by the MEC.

Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 76 824 voters are registered in the 15 wards and 85 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
