Municipal ward by-elections will take place on Wednesday, 2 September 2009 in the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Northern Cape and Western Cape.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) confirmed that 10 vacant wards will be contested by 38 candidates of whom seven are independent candidates and the rest represents 11 political parties.
One by-election will take place in the Eastern Cape
* Ward eight in King Sabata Dalindyebo (Umtata), EC157 will be contested by Tula Edgar Mapekula of the African National Congress, Pamela Sarah Toto of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania and Veronica Jacqualene Addison of the United Democratic Movement.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
In Gauteng by-elections will take place in four wards
* Ward 12 in Ekurhuleni (East Rand), EKU will be contested by Rudolf Johannes van der Westhuizen of the African Christian Alliance-Afrikaner Christen Alliansie, Maanyaku Lucy Manyaka of the African Christian Democratic Party, Mamolele Thomas Mabye of the African National Congress, Mamma Sylvia Moremi of the African People’s Convention and Thando Mgaweni of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
* Ward 13 in Westonaria (Westonaria), GT483 will be contested by Thokozani Amos Mncube of the African National Congress, Richard Thembinkosi Msiya of the Azanian People’s Organisation, and Dorah Maletsholo Kotsi of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 18 in city of Johannesburg (Johannesburg), JHB will be contested by two independent candidates, Arndene Heather Alaard and Gertrude Cissie Ryan, Walter Alvin Meyer of the African Christian Democratic Party, Mohau Melani of the African National Congress, Mcebisi Emmanuel Matthews of the Azanian People’s Organisation and Kevin Patrick Wax of the Democratic Alliance. The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
* Ward 76 in Tshwane metropolitan municipality (Pretoria), TSH will be contested by Madimetja Stephens Malinga, an independent candidate, Michael Modise of the African Christian Alliance-Afrikaner Christen Alliansie, Gaborutwe Rachel Malahlela of the African National Congress and Melusi Josiah Maseko of the Azanian People’s Organisation. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
In KwaZulu-Natal two by-elections will take place
* Ward 52 in eThekwini (Durban metropolitan municipality), ETH will be contested by Dickson Murthi of the African Christian Democratic Party, Kalimuthu Pethan Pandaram of the African National Congress, Ramachundra Govender of the Democratic Alliance, Coopoosamy Govender of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Bradley Singh of the Minority Front. The ward was previously represented by the Minority Front and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
* Ward 11 in Umvoti (Greytown), KZN245 will be contested by Alfred Genesis Ndlovu of the African National Congress and Frederick Masikane of the Inkatha Freedom Party. The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
One by-election will take place in Limpopo
* Ward 8 in Lephalale (Ellisras), LIM362 will be contested by Jauma Ananius Mogoasa of the African National Congress, Ramoneke George Mosima of the African People’s Convention and Ramasela Sophia Mabote of the Congress of the People. The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
In Northern Cape one by-election will take place
* Ward 12 in Khara Hais (Upington), NC083 by Elizabeth Olyn of the African National Congress and Patrick Petrus Maasdorp of the Congress of the People.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
In Western Cape one by-election will take place
* Ward five in Witzenberg (Ceres), WC022 will be contested by four independent candidates, Andre John Koopman, Hermias Jacobus De Jongh, John Williams Schuurman and Jonathan Franklin Nel and Dirk Swart of the Democratic Alliance.
The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the resignation of the councillor.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 89 748 voters are registered in the 10 wards and 59 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
