Ward by-elections will take place on Wednesday, 12 August 2009, in KwaZulu-Natal, the Northern Cape and the Western Cape.
The Electoral Commission confirmed that seven vacant wards will be contested by 18 candidates of whom three are independent candidates and the rest represent five political parties.
In KwaZulu-Natal by-elections will take place in five wards:
* Ward 19 in Emnambithi/Ladysmith – KZN232 will be contested by Sportboy Penuel Thwala, and independent candidate, Sibusiso Dennis Sokhela of the African National Congress and Thamsanqa Joseph Zulu of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 6 in Indaka [Waaihoek] – KZN233 will be contested by Vimba Wiseman Mbhele of the African National Congress; Sicelo Johannes Zikalala of the Inkatha Freedom Party and Ernest Thokozani Magudulela of the National Democratic Convention.
The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 1 in Okhahlamba [Bergville] – KZN235 will be contested by Thobile Topsy Mpembe of the African National Congress and Tolika Amen Mazibuko of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 5 in Nqutu [Nqutu] – KZN242 will be contested by Elizabeth Dumazile Mthombeni of the African National Congress and Mjumeli Nicholas Buthelezi of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
* Ward 9 in Umvoti [Greytown] – KZN245 will be contested by Jabulile Florence Nsele of the African National Congress and Zamokwakhe Wilson Xaba of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
The ward was previously represented by the Inkatha Freedom Party and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
In the Northern Cape one by-election will take place in:
* Ward 1 in KHâI-MA [Pofadder] – NC067 will be contested by Andries Edward Diergaardt of the African National Congress and Lakus Hendry Van Rooi of the Congress of the People.
The ward was previously represented by the African National Congress and became vacant due to the termination of the membership of the councillor by the party.
In the Western Cape one by-election will take place:
* Ward 3 in Witzenberg [Ceres] – WC022 will be contested by two independent candidates, Mark Anthony Mentor and Petrus Nathaniel Brandt Nel; Johannes Rickus Willemse of the African National Congress and Barnito Charles Klaasen of the Democratic Alliance.
The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant due to the death of the councillor.
Voting stations will be open from 07h00 to 21h00. A total of 26 618 voters are registered in the seven wards and 35 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place.
