Multipurpose sport court and community gym handover, Steynsrus

The Department of Sport, Arts Culture and Recreation will officially hand over a multi-purpose sport court to the community of Steynsrus and a community gym to the community of Kutlwanong/Odendaalsrus.

Multipurpose sport court:

As part of efforts to ensure that our communities have access to sports and are presented with adequate facilities to engage in different sport codes, the multi-purpose sport court aims to enhance the department’s vision of encouraging all people in our communities to actively take part in different sport and recreational activities.

The multi-purpose sport Court allows for a number of different sporting codes to be played simultaneously. The different sporting codes that can be played on this court include, amongst others: soccer, netball, hockey, indigenous games such as Kgathi, Intonga and so on.

The courts also a suitable as training and development grounds for local coaches to improve upon their skills and excel in their respective sport codes. A total number of 10 courts have so far been built in the Province and about eight more are still envisaged for other rural communities of the Province. MEC Dan Kgothule will officially handover this Multi-purpose Sport Court to the community of Steynsrus on the 17th March 2012 at 10h00.

Community gym:

MEC Dan Kgothule will continue to hand over a community gym to the community of Odendaalsrus. The gym has been built for this community by the department in partnership with Sport and Recreation South Africa.

This is the second gym to be built in the Free State after the first was handed over to the community of Wepener. Three more are earmarked for the communities of Heilbron, Warden and Virginia in the immediate future.

The gym is equipped with the state of the art equipment and has been built to the value of around R1 million.
