As part of October Transport Month, Mr Jeremy Cronin, MP, Deputy Minister of Transport will be attending and participating by means of addressing two events on Wednesday, 12 October 2011.
Mr Cronin will be viewing progress on Infrastructure and Station Upgrade intervention at Greenview Station, east of Eerste Fabrieke and deliver a keynote address there at 10h05 to 10h30.
The above event also has opportunity for media briefing scheduled for 10h50.
In the second event, Mr Cronin will be addressing issues of safety, generally on public transport and particularly on railway, to the Community of Mamelodi East at Stanza Bopape Community Hall, his keynote address programmed for 12h20 and once again, opportunity for media briefing presents itself here at 13h20.
In Greenview, apart from government building a new railway station there, which aims at putting an end to commuters who include learners from walking long distances to Mamelodi Gardens and suffer long waiting periods between trains, the number of trains that will be increased in this particular corridor will be of great relief to them. Currently there are 114 trains per day. This is a number that is being taken to 200 trains per day.
Again, of significance is the doubling of the railway line track from a single one. This addition makes it possible to schedule trains as close as seven minutes apart, far much better than an hour it was taking to make a single trip.
As far as the second event is concerned, we know how precious human life is. It is totally impossible to replace lost human life or for a vanished one to return. Government working together with communities can easily turn the tide against perpetual careless loss of life. The community of Mamelodi is cut into two by Transnet Freight Rail line. This poses a number of challenges such as trespassing, which leads to people being struck by trains. People stealing cables who are coming from our communities are also compounding the challenge let alone those who vandalise trains, so Mr Jeremy Cronin will be sincerely appealing to the Mamelodi community to work with government and everybody else in saving their lives.
