Mpumalanga to hold Local Government Summit

Mpumalanga province will convene a two day Local Government Summit. The Local Government Summit follows an assessment done in all municipalities, after some incidents of unrests in the province.

The assessments were conducted by a ministerial task teams comprising of officials from the national and provincial departments of cooperative government and traditional affairs. These assessments were on governance, financial management, service delivery and infrastructure, labour relations and local economic development.

From the assessments, a local government turnaround strategy was developed, which is to be discussed at the summit. The summit will look at the following objectives:

* discuss and reflect on the state of local government in the province.
* discuss and agree on the provincial local government turnaround strategy and action plan.
* agree on a way forward to ensure local government is everyone’s business.

The summit aims to assist municipalities to be more people centred and service delivery driven. It will be attended by the national Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Sicelo Shiceka, Premier David Mabuza, the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Mr Norman Mokoena, and the Members of the Executive Council, all executive mayors and members of mayoral committees, municipal managers, all heads of departments, section 57 managers, heads of parastatals, and organised labour. Together all the stakeholders will map the way forward in terms of turning around local government.
