The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will deliver an address at the official handover of a mobile science laboratory to the ArcelorMittal Science Centre in Vredenburg, Saldanha. The event will take place on Friday, 13 April 2012, from 11h00.
The ArcelorMittal Science Centre is one of 31 science centres across the country sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to promote science awareness. The DST assists the centres through capacity building and annual development grant support, among other things.
Science centres are designed to enhance science and technology literacy among the youth and the public, and to nurture young people's potential for science and technology-based careers.
The ArcelorMittal Science Centre opened its doors in 2009 with the objective of supporting the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in Saldanha and the surrounding areas. Over 1 500 learners receive extra tuition in Mathematics, Physical Science, Life Science and Accounting at the Centre.
