Ministers and gender activists discuss women political participation in Africa

Cabinet Ministers and gender activists from South Africa and the African continent are to meet in Parktown, Johannesburg tomorrow (Saturday, 21 May) to discuss women participation in political processes including conflict resolution in their respective countries.

Participants in the meeting organised by the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa will include:

  • Women, Children and People with Disabilities Minister Lulu Xingwana
  • International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane
  • Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula
  • Gauteng Premier Nomvula Nonkonyane
  • North West Premier and Deputy African National Congress Secretary Thandi Modise
  • and CEO of the Independent Electoral Commission Adv Pansy Tlakula

While sharing South Africa’s experience of yet another free and fair elections with women representatives from other countries, the meeting will be a platform to discuss women participation in the election and their role in the establishment of new political leadership for local government.

The meeting will also discuss the role of women in conflict resolution and peace-keeping in the African continent with guest-speakers from Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan presenting their country experiences.
