Minister Xingwana visits severely disabled children on waiting list for services

Launch of Disability Awareness Campaign

The Minister for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana and South African Disability Alliance will tomorrow, Friday, 12 November launch the Disability Awareness Campaign at Tumelo Home for Mentally and Physically Handicapped Children in Ivory Park, Midrand.

The home currently accommodates 32 children most of whom are either orphaned, abandoned or were abused in their families setting. Serving a local population of about 1,5 million, there is a long list of children waiting to be accommodated at the home.

Before the launch, Minister Xingwana will visit some of the families with children on the waiting list as part of the assessment of interventions needed to address the situation. Minister Xingwana is expected to announce efforts that will be undertaken by the Department to ensure the realization of rights of persons with disabilities.

Starting tomorrow, the Campaign aims to raise awareness about the challenges and highlight key interventions for protection of rights of people with disabilities. The Campaign will run up the International Day for Persons with Disabilities on 3 December which will be commemorated in a Disability Summit to be held in Bloemfontein.
