The Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Lulu Xingwana, will tomorrow (Wednesday) launch Child-Friendly Cities-Park Rehabilitation Project in Gamalakhe township, Port Shepstone in Ugu District.
With the current spate of child killings in our country, it has become urgent to find an integrated approach to create safe spaces for our children where they live and play. In memory of all our children who were brutally murdered, the department is determined to work tirelessly towards creating safe and secure cities.
An effort to move towards the implementation of a Child Friendly Cities model across the country in partnership with municipalities is firmly underway. Consistent with the UN Convention on the Rights of Children and the Children’s Act, we need to ensure child participation because their voice must be heard if the spaces are said to be created for them.
As a department, we have embraced the notion of safer cities because of our firm conviction that promoting clean and safer cities will help to improve the quality of life of women and children.
