Minister Xingwana to address the International Day of People with Disabilities

The rights of people with disabilities will occupy centre stage this weekend when the Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms. Lulu Xingwana, and Deputy Minister Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu address the International Day of People with Disabilities on Saturday, 3 December in Bloemfontein.

The Saturday event will seek to raise awareness around the National Campaign on Universal Access, which was launched on the 3rd of November. The campaign aims to popularise and facilitate compliance with the requirements of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, within the context of the five government priorities.

The specific focus areas of the campaign for the period November 2011 – March 2014, will be:

  • reasonable accommodation in the workplace, including accessibility of the built environment, access to personal assistance and assistive devices
  • access to buildings where government services are being provided, including educational institutions, housing, medical facilities, emergency services
  • access to public transport
  • information and communications, including electronic services, Braille and Signage and sector campaigns
  • access to assistive devices
  • access to social security.
