The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa and the Premier of Mpumalanga Province, Mr David Mabuza, will address delegates at the Mpumalanga Provincial Climate Change Summit at Ehlanzeni District Municipality on Thursday, 6 October 2011.
The Department of Environmental Affairs will host the Climate Change Summit in collaboration with the Mpumalanga Provincial Government until 7 October 2011. The summit forms part of South Africa's preparations for the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) taking place in Durban from 28 November to 9 December 2011.
The purpose of this summit is to educate, inform, engage and raise awareness about climate change to the general public. As Head of the South African Delegation for COP17, Edna Molewa, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs is entrusted with the responsibility of leading the South African delegation in pursuing the country’s interest at the UNFCCC, COP 17/CMP 7 negotiations.
The Summits comprise part of the Public Climate Change Outreach and Mobilisation Programme which is one of the Department’s key priorities in the build up to COP17.
The Mpumalanga MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr MN Mokoena is also expected to speak at the summit.
