The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa to address the First Hunting Indaba

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa will on Monday 29 October 2012 address the first Hunting Indaba, at The Palace at Sun City, North West Province.

Hunting is a popular sport in South Africa and the government supports and promotes responsible hunting that is done in an ecologically sustainable manner and that contributes to the conservation of the species involved. The hunting industry is currently regulated in terms of both provincial and national legislation, resulting in a number of challenges that could impact, not only on the sustainability of the industry, but may also have a conservation impact.

In order to create a platform for dialogue regarding this matter, the Minister is hosting a hunting indaba on 29 and 30 October 2012. The opportunity would be used to engage with the hunting industry, other governmental entities, and interested and affected parties to create a platform for discussions and will hopefully lead to further engagements, that will assist government and the industry to address and unpack issues such as the provision of incentives, assistance to small business enterprises, transformation of the hunting industry, and mechanisms and interventions required to develop the full potential of the hunting industry and maximise benefits arising from this industry.

The hunting industry contributes substantially to the economy of the country. In 2010 hunting season, total revenue of approximately R1.1 billion was generated by the local and trophy hunting industries collectively.

Interested and affected parties that want to attend the indaba (at own cost) must confirm attendance on or before 25 October 2012. Please note that the venue can only accommodate a limited number of participants and media are requested to RSVP by no later than 12h00 on Thursday, 25 October 2012
