Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs attend the seventh session of the Executive Committee Meeting of the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW)

All media are informed that the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs will depart South Africa today, Tuesday 28 July 2009, heading for the Nigerian capital Abuja. Minister Sonjica will, together with her African counterparts, attend the seventh session of the Executive Committee Meeting of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) as well as the launch of the Secretariat of AMCOW.

AMCOW was inaugurated on 29 to 30 April 2002 pursuant to Ministers responsible for certain portfolios being asked to devise strategies for achieving the goals of New Partnership for Africa's Development NEPAD. Water was recognised as having a central role to play in the lives of all and therefore the inauguration of AMCOW was regarded as critical.
