Minister Sonjica to launch national youth service pilot project on environment

Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Buyelwa Sonjica will on Thursday, 25 June launch the environment department’s national youth service programme pilot project in Saldanha, Western Cape. The launch is significant as it takes place during June which is celebrated as National Youth and National Environment Month.

One hundred and fifty unemployed youth between the ages of 19 and 35 from around Saldanha will be officially welcomed into a year of full time service on Thursday, 25 June 2009.

The Saldanha programme is one of three pilot projects that the Environment Department has embarked on. The other two pilot programmes are located in Hermanus in the Western Cape and Johannesburg in Gauteng.

In keeping with the government’s National Youth Service Programme, the programme intends to engage South African youth in community service activities in order to strengthen service delivery, promote nation building and foster social cohesion. The programme is aimed at assisting youth to gain occupational skills to access sustainable livelihood opportunities.
