Minister Sisulu visits SANDF members in DRC ahead of presidential elections

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Honourable LN Sisulu, will on Sunday, 20 November 2011, travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to meet her counterpart in order to discuss preparations for the 2011 Presidential elections and other issues of mutual interest.

The Minister will also receive briefings on logistical and security arrangements from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in support of the DRC Presidential elections.

The SANDF has more than one thousand soldiers deployed in the DRC as peacekeepers under the auspices of the United Nations. Some of them will not return home for Christmas, South Africa, in order to maintain peace and stability post November elections.

President Zuma as the Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation has also tasked Minister of Correctional Services Ms Mapisa Nqakula to lead SADC Observer Mission which is already on the ground in the DRC.

The Minister will be accompanied by the SANDF Chief Joint Operations, Lt General Mgwebi.
