Minister Shabangu to hand over newly built houses and computer centres to communities of Kwazulu-Natal

Mineral Resources Minister, Susan Shabangu (MP) will be handing over twenty-four houses and two computer centres to communities of Ladysmith and Verulam on 12 to 13 August 2011.

The two projects were proposed and facilitated by the department (DMR), and form part of Afrisam’s Social and Labour Plan (SLP) commitments which is an agreement undertaken by companies when they receive a mining right.

As a means to alleviate the province’s housing backlog, the company established the Shayamoya housing project and built twenty-four three bedroom houses with the help of the Uthukela District and Ladysmith local Municipalities who provided roads infrastructure, domestic water supply, storm-water drainage systems and technical services. Beneficiaries will also receive groceries to the value of R1000 each, upon receiving their new homes.

The company followed a self established criteria and selected beneficiaries in Steadville, Ladysmith who are categorised as child headed families, orphans, elderly, physical and mentally abused and children infected with HIV and AIDS.

They also established two state-of-the–art computer centres respectively at Everest Height and Redcliffe Primary Schools in Verulam, each equipped with twenty computers and various high-tech accessories.

NB: The ceremonies will also be attended by KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Dr. Zweli Mhkize, MEC for Human Settlements, Ms Magesvari Govender, MEC for Education, Mr Senzo Mchunu and Mayors from both Ethekwini District and Ladysmith Local Municipalities.
