The Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Gugile Nkwinti cordially invites members of the media to hand over the Water reservoir in Mokgalwaneng to the community on the 4th August 2012.
Mokgalwaneng is one of the department’s Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) sites in the North West province. One of the successful projects is the Mokgalwaneng brick making project. This project supplies paving bricks to 11 projects and employs 22 people. The bricks made in this project are used to pave roads. One of those is the road that links Matlametlong to Mokgalwaneng village.
In 2009 the newly created National Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) was given a mandate to implement a CRDP throughout the country. The CRDP has three focuses: agrarian transformation, land reform and rural development and aims to enable rural people to take control of their destiny, with the support from government to optimally use and manage natural resources.
The end point of the programme is “equitable, sustainable and vibrant rural communities” in South Africa. To achieve this, a fresh approach to rural development including refining definitions and integrating the programme into the fabric of government and society was needed.
The CRDP aims to build relationships of communities with land in rural areas. In rural areas land is the main asset base. In some areas land is rural areas is communally owned. Rural households survive on productive activity linked to land usage. CDRP works towards positive engagement of communities in their surroundings. This engagement in the CRDP is through a process of knowledge building which encompasses social profiling of rural households through involvement of local rural youth.
