Tomorrow, Transport and Public Works Minister Robin Carlisle and Education Minister Donald Grant will be monitoring one of the entrance areas to the Golden Acre Shopping centre where hundreds of learners pass each morning en route to their schools from the city train station.
Minister Grant has conducted several late-coming events at schools in the city centre and many of the learners have complained that “late trains” were the cause of their late arrival at schools.
A large proportion of learners from the city schools travel from areas outside the city centre to schools in the city and rely on public transport such as trains to get them to school on time.
While ‘late trains’ simply cannot always be to blame (many learners simply wake up too late) it has become their most popular excuse and can ultimately affect the protection of teaching and learning time.
Minister Grant will be assessing if late trains does have an effect on late coming in our city schools or if it’s simply just a case of ‘learner tardiness’. Minister Carlisle will be monitoring the effects of Metrorail train delays on one of their biggest clients – the learners.
