The Minister of Police, Mr. Nathi Mthethwa will undertake an official visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam from 2-8 November 2011 as part of strengthening police cooperation between South Africa and Vietnam. He will hold several bilateral talks with his Vietnamese counterpart, Mr. Tran Dai Quang, Minister of Public Security.
The visit is a follow up to a meeting held in South Africa in June this year, wherein a Letter of Intent on police cooperation between South Africa and Vietnam was signed. Amongst the expected issues of cooperation between the two ministries would be around preventing, combating and investigating crime, recognising the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational organised crime.
Other issues expected to be discussed include consolidating and exchanging of working experience, information necessary to combat crime as well as exploring further mechanisms to cooperate.
Whilst in Vietnam, Minister Mthethwa will also address the Vietnamese National Assembly Committee on Security and National Defence and visit the People’s Police Academy (equivalent to the South African Police Service) to observe some of their policing programmes.
During Minister Mthethwa’s absence, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Jeff Radebe will be acting Minister of Police.
