The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa will tomorrow engage with communities, business leaders, CPFs, civic organisations as well as the representatives from other government departments such as Correctional Services and Justice and Constitutional Development; in dealing with the recent emergence of mob justice or “necklacing of criminals” around the Eastern Cape province.
The ministry’s stance in fighting crime is that South Africa has laws which must be respected without fail, all the time. We equally need to ensure that our laws favour citizens, while dealing a blow to criminals.
“Whilst the rights of all citizens need to be protected as entrenched in our Constitution, rights of criminals must not supersede those of law-abiding citizens. We need to advocate that society must not take the law into their hands; their task is to report these criminals to the police. Police must then take over and do the right thing, which is to make life very, very difficult for these criminals,” stated the Minister.
