The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, supported by Deputy Minister of Police, Ms Makhotso Sotyu and the National Commissioner of Police, General Riah Phiyega will announce the South African Police Service (SAPS) National Crime Statistics for the period 01 April 2011 to 31 March 2012.
Annually, the Minister announces crime statistics to the nation and this announcement is interlinked with the release of the SAPS Annual Report. The statistics provide a systematic assessment of the state of crime in the country as well as an opportunity to review and improve on strategies that are in place to fight crime.
While there have been some steady declines in various crime categories over the past few years, government acknowledges that more still needs to be done. As the Ministry of Police in particular, we continue to strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders. In dealing with the scourge of crime, it became apparent to us that police alone cannot win the fight against crime. Criminals do not live in isolation from communities. That is why a multi-pronged approach in the fight against crime, underpinned by the involvement of the communities we serve, is the only and most effective solution to eradicating crime.
Also in attendance at the announcement will be MECs responsible for policing, Heads of Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Civilian Secretariat for Police, Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, SAPS Senior Management including all the Provincial Commissioners as well as representatives from Business, CPFs, research and academic fraternities.
