The Institute for Security Studies will be hosting a conference on 30 September and 1 October 2010 on "Policing in South Africa: 2010 and beyond." The objective of the conference is to provide the South African Police Service and civil-society organisations with a platform to discuss, share insights and research into key policy issues related to policing in South Africa.
The Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa will deliver a keynote address at the conference, presenting the ministry’s vision for the police in South Africa over the next five years.
A number of senior police officers and civil society experts in the field of policing have been invited to deliver presentations and participate in deliberations on the following themes:
- The strategic plan of the South African Police Service for 2010 to 2014
- Understanding the dynamics of police discipline and rank from an international comparative perspective
- Best policy approaches and practice in relation to the use of deadly force by police
- Effective strategies for addressing police corruption in South Africa
- Lessons from policing the World Cup and the challenges of violent and organised crime.
