Minister Peters launches component two of the Durban Landfill Gas to Electricity Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project, the first landfill gas to electricity in Africa

The Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters invites the members of the media to the official launch of Component 2 of the eThekwini Durban Landfill Gas to Electricity CDM project on 28 January 2010 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

This project was the first landfill clean development mechanism Project of which the Bisasar Road landfill component was registered on 26 March 2009. The project comprises of the extraction of landfill gas (40 to 60 percent methane) through gas extraction wells and interlinking pipe work installed at the Bisasar Road landfill site. Electricity at the Bisasar Road landfill compound is generated through purpose built 1MW engines currently generating a total of 6.5MW with a further 1MW engine at the Marianhill landfill site totalling 7.5MW. The project will bring about the reduction in the release of harmful greenhouse gas.

Total project expenditure is approximately R100 million. Total project income revenue is estimated around R4,5 million per month realised from the sale of carbon credits and the sale of electricity.
