The KwaMashu Cinema is a pilot project led by the Department for Arts and Culture and will precede the national roll out of state of the art cinema equipment for viewing by the public.
The project is part of the department’s efforts to stimulate appreciation for film products and to promote the culture of movie going in communities.
The project is expected to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the local film industry by bringing film products closer to communities thus strengthening efforts aimed at audience development and increasing demand especially for local film products.
The department, through the National Film and Video Foundation has been allocated R10 million in the last financial year for the roll out of this project throughout the country.
The film industry is one of the industries that can contribute significantly to the national effort to create jobs and grow the economy.
