Minister of Arts and Culture, Paul Mashatile will launch the third National Book Week, which runs from 3 to 8 September 2012, in Uitenhage. National Book Week is an initiative of the Department of Arts and Culture in association with the South African Book Development Council (SABDC).
According to Minister Mashatile, “National Book Week is one of the most significant interventions in our efforts to mainstream the book sector as an important contributor to job creation, poverty reduction and skills development.”
National Book Week is an annual premier platform through which government, the book sector; media and civil society establish dynamic partnerships for the promotion of the culture of reading.
With its call to action being “Read a Book, Share a Book”, the programme of National Book Week will feature a number of reading activities for the young and old. Activities will include storytelling, puppet shows, book club sessions, book debates and creative writing workshops led by some prominent authors.
Authors in attendance will include Elinor Sisulu, McIntosh Polela, Deon Meyer, Thando Mgqolozana, Chris van Wyk, Angela Makholwa, Ndumiso Ngcobo, etc. There will also be a mix of ambassadors who will give motivational talks and read to children. Some of the ambassadors include Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Zonke, Aaron Moloisi, Jafta Mamabolo, Shaka Sisulu, Kabomo, and many others.
