Minister Pandor to deliver keynote address at the Higher Education South Africa (HESA) conference, CSIR Convention Centre, Pretoria

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor will, tomorrow, Friday, 12 March 2010, at 08h00 deliver a keynote address at the Higher Education South Africa (HESA) conference, currently underway at the CSIR International Convention Centre, Meiring Naude Road, Brummeria, Pretoria.

The two-day conference, which started today, 11 March 2010, is set to strengthen the research and innovation capacity of the higher education sector in the country.

Themed “Strengthening collaboration between higher education, government and industry for research and innovation”, the conference is attended by senior government ministers, directors-general, researchers and innovation scholars, higher education and business leadership, advisory, research and innovation councils.

Its discussions revolve around the following five themes:

* Improving research training and research career development
* Research equipment and infrastructure to enable research and innovation in the country to thrive
* strengthening partnerships and internationalisation efforts
* Procurement, intellectual property and innovation
* Research and innovation funding.

The Department of Science and Technology is the patron of HESA through its various initiatives to strengthen the research and innovation capacity of the higher education sector in the country. These include, among others, internship, national equipment and centres of excellence programmes.
