Minister Pandor to address the opening ceremony of the Science Festivals Africa 2011 in Grahamstown

The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will, tomorrow, Friday, 6 May 2011 at 18h00, deliver the opening address to mark the start of Science Festivals (SciFest) Africa 2011, at the Guy Butler Theatre in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape.

Science festivals are public events aimed at exciting people with science, engineering and technology (SET).  Their design is such that they provide platforms for people to engage with SET informally. They also provide the opportunity for learners, in particular, to interact with scientists.

Held under the theme, “Science across Cultures”, this year’s SciFest Africa keynote lecture will be delivered by Dr Adrian Tiplady of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. His lecture will highlight the SKA project as a leading example of “Science across cultures”.

The theme was chosen to promote the 6th Science Centre World Congress scheduled to take place in Cape Town on 4 to 8 September 2011.

The lecture series will feature, amongst many others, Professor Alta Schutte, winner in the category Distinguished Young Woman Scientist in the Life Sciences in the Department of Science and Technology 2010 South African Women in Science Awards, as well as Dr Nomakwezi Mzilikazi, runner-up in the same category.

Media are invited.
