Minister to officiate National Youth Chefs Training Programme graduation ceremony

The Minister of Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, will officiate the class of 2011 National Youth Chefs Training Programme graduation ceremony to be held in the Western Cape on 1 March 2012. The graduation ceremony marks the culmination of this successful project and is testament to the department’s commitment to building the economy.

The National Department of Tourism (NDT) in conjunction with the South African Chefs Association (SACA) embarked on the nation-wide training programme following the Tourism Skills Audit Report of 2007, which identified professional cookery or chef qualifications as one of the scarce skills in the tourism industry. Eight hundred (800) unemployed youth beneficiaries were selected to participate in the programme which has now culminated in the graduation of the successful candidates.

The Minister will also announce the implementation of phase two which sees the intake of five hundred new entrants who will be recruited and selected for 2012/13 financial year period.
