Minister of Higher Education and Training Dr Blade Nzimande will visit the East London and Alice campuses of the University of Fort Hare as part of a series of nationwide visits to higher education and training institutions. During the visit to Fort Hare, Minister Nzimande will officially open two refurbished student residences situated on the main campus in Alice.
The Department of Higher Education and Training funded the refurbishment of the two largest residences, Jabavu and Jolobe at a cost of R25 million. The project was completed in nine weeks. The refurbishment of these residences is one of many initiatives aimed at addressing accommodation challenges facing institutions of higher learning.
The two renovated residences are able to house 380 students and will provide a quality living and learning environment for them. The bedrooms have all been modernised and made vastly more comfortable than before. Self-catering kitchens and lounges have been provided on each floor of each building.
Minister Nzimande will also deliver a public lecture at the university to motivate first year students in their study.
