Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, will on September 4 launch a ground-breaking research project to develop a Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) system that will enable government and the private sector to make better decisions in matching skills demand to supply in the country.
Through this initiative, South Africa will now have a labour market intelligence system that will empower students and work-seekers to make better informed education and skills decisions, which in turn will make them more attractive to employers and the economy in general.
“This is a long overdue and exciting initiative. Through this labour market intelligence system, government and its entities, as well as private sector companies will be able to make better strategic decisions in matching skills demand and supply. Our higher education and training institutions will also be able to respond more effectively to shifting labour market demand signals,” Minister Nzimande said.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), Dr Olive Shisana, will co-launch the initiative with Minister Nzimande at the HSRC as the council is leading the national research consortium in creating the system.
