Bloemwater unveils the Conduit Hydropower Plant in Brandkop
The University of Pretoria, the Water Research Commission (WRC) of South Africa and Bloemwater will host various stakeholders as they unveil the Bloemwater Conduit Hydropower Plant at Brandkop, Bloemfontein this evening - 31 March 2015.
The idea to launch the Hydropower Plant came after The University of Pretoria, supported by the Water Research Commission of South Africa and Bloemwater, including collaborating organisations such as the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality and the eThekwini Municipality, successfully investigated and demonstrated the potential of conduit hydropower. This type of technology is said to enable the extraction of available energy from existing and newly installed water supply and distribution systems. This process will allow users to generate hydroelectricity for on-site use.
Due to their very long lifetimes and proven high efficiency levels with low operating and maintenance costs, this hydropower scheme will provide huge savings and costs relief for the Bloemwater Board which will pave way for better water supply and the eradication of uneven distribution of water.
Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) Minister, Nomvula Mokonyane will officially launch this project and deliver the key-note address during the event in which Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete will also be present.
The event also seeks to celebrate this major scientific and engineering accomplishment and address the economic and social impacts this technology may have should it be implemented on a broader scale.
