International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane will participate in a ministerial meeting of the African Union's (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC), scheduled to take place in Bamako, Mali on 20 March 2012.
The meeting will consider, amongst other things, a report on the impact of the Libyan crisis on the Sahel countries and the means by which the AU could enhance the efforts of the region and mobilise adequate assistance from the international community to support the priorities identified by the affected countries.
The PSC is an organ of the AU in charge of enforcing AU decisions. Members are elected by the Assembly of the AU so as to reflect regional balances within Africa. The Council is composed of 15 countries, of which five are elected to three-year terms, and 10 to two-year terms. South Africa was one of the ten countries elected to serve for a term of two years as from 1 April 2010.
