Minister Ndebele to launch the pedestrian safety campaign

Media are cordially invited to join Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele and senior officials of Eqstra Fleet Management and Logistics, the United Nations and the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in support of Nelson Mandela Day to the launch of the Pedestrian Safety Campaign.

In spite of numerous efforts to curb road deaths, South Africa has seen deaths increase faster than the vehicle population over the past 50 years, with some years as exceptions. The pedestrian category alone accounts for nearly 40% of road fatalities annually.

The Think Pedestrian campaign is aimed at stabilising then reducing that statistics through generating robust awareness and education programmes to both drivers and pedestrians.

The partnership between the Department of Transport, Eqstra Fleet Management & Logistics, the United Nations and Nelson Centre of Memory will implement the pedestrian program firstly in Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape. The implementation in the other provinces will ensue in due course.
