Minister Ndebele to launch Eastern Cape Road Safety Council

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the Eastern Cape Road Safety Council on Monday, 13 September 2010.

The minister will be joined by Eastern Cape MEC for Roads and Transport Ms Ghishma Barry as well as other members of the Transport family.

The details of the event are as follows:

Date: Monday, 13 September 2010
Venue: Premier Hotel Regent, 22 Esplanade, Beach Road, East London, Eastern Cape
Time: 12h00

NB: Journalists wishing to accompany the minister on the home visits should meet at East London Airport at 10h30 on 13 September 2010

As part of the event, the minister will also visit the homes of accident victims in East London and hand over Road Accident Fund (RAF) payouts to the value of more than R3 million to affected citizens in the Eastern Cape.

At the Road Safety Summit hosted in February in Gauteng, Minister Ndebele announced that Community Road Safety Councils will soon be part of every municipality in the country.

KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng already have Community Road Safety Councils in place. On Monday, 13 September, the Eastern Cape is launching its Council.

Road safety is not something you do to a community but something you do with a community.

These Community Road Safety Councils will therefore empower communities to become key players in their own safety on the roads working directly with all relevant stakeholders.

All media are invited to attend. Journalists attending must confirm attendance by no later than 12h00 on Friday, 10 September 2010, with:
