Minister Ndebele and Maritime sector honour Seafarers

Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at the “Seafarer of the Year” awards to be held in Cape Town.

The Minister will be joined by Western Cape MEC for Transport Robin Carlisle, CEO of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), General Tsietsi Mokhele and senior national and provincial government officials including key stakeholders in the maritime industry.

At the function, the Minister and the maritime sector will celebrate the significant role played and contribution made by South African seafarers when the SAMSA Seafarer of the Year Award winners are announced.

The Seafarers who will be honoured at this year’s awards are fishermen, salvors, merchant mariners, offshore riggers, engineers, harbour pilots and rescue crew, all of whom play a major role in moving trade, harvesting resources and keeping the waters safe. Nominees will be accepted in the categories of: Fishing, Commercial, Shore-based and Overall SAMSA Seafarer of the Year.

A winner will be announced in each of these categories, and the overall winner will be judged across all the categories and awarded the SAMSA Seafarer of the Year trophy and a cash prize of R20 000. This individual would be characterised as being an exceptional achiever, highly dedicated and having strong leadership qualities.
